LAURENS King Cegil Hanna, Sr. died Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Providence Hospital, Columbia. Born October 28, 1917 in Hemingway, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Walden Fosten and Louise McDaniel Hanna. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dora Elizabeth (Totsie) Black Hanna; and sons, Charles W. Hanna (Sherren) and daughters Mary Elizabeth and Sara Walden of Batesburg-Leesville; K.C. Hanna, Jr. (Marian) and daughter Marian Bryce and son King III of Columbia; and William Samuel Hanna (Connie) and son William, and daughter Elizabeth of Richmond, Virginia. He was predeceased by a twin brother, Cecil, brothers Hermis and Eugene, and sisters, Rita Newell and Edith Lee. Mr. Hanna was educated in Hemingway Public Schools and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Newberry College, Class of 1940, where he was a member of the varsity football team, and a Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina with a postgraduate study at Columbia University and Peabody College. During World War II, he served nineteen months in recruit training at Bainbridge Naval Training Station, Maryland, and two and a half years aboard the Battleship Washington in the South Pacific with the rank Lieutenant j.g. Following World War II he returned to South Carolina to resume his career in education serving as teacher, coach, and principal in Aiken County Public Schools, as superintendent of Bamberg County District II for 13 years and superintendent of Laurens County School District 55 for 15 years. He was active in numerous state teacher and administrative organizations and was a past president of the South Carolina High School League. Upon his retirement, Laurens County School District 55 named their football stadium "K.C. Hanna Stadium" in his honor. Mr. Hanna was a life long member of the United Methodist Church and took an active roll in his church and in the Lions Club and Rotary Club in his home community. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday at First Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Eugene L. Curry and Dr. Tommy Reeves. Internment will be 4:00 PM Wednesday at Good Hope Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ward, S.C. The family will be at the residence, 1615 Greenwood Highway.
