Emeline, wife of the late Phineas Shafer, died at her home one and one-quarter miles west of our village, on Thursday morning, Oct.7th. She was the daughter of Isaac and Hannah Buskirk and was born upon the farm now owned by William Dodds in the Conesus valley, on May 25th, 1834. She had always resided in Conesus and her death occurred on the farm which, on April 1st last, had been her home for fifty consecutive years. She leaves one son, Frank P. Shafer of this town, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary B. Culbert of North Adams, Mich., and Mrs. R. C. Jones of Loyalton, Cal. For several years past Mrs. Shafer had been in poor health but was not considered seriously ill until August 3d last, since which time she had gradually grown weaker until her death. Very few, if any, now remain of those who were her neighbors in the early years of her married life. She lived to see a practically new neighborhood grow up about her. By her recent associates, as well as by her earlier friends, she was known as a kind neighbor, a genial companion and a welcome addition to the social circle. Her funeral was held from her late home on Saturday afternoon, the Rev. H. [Herbert] P. Morrell [Universalist] of Buffalo officiating, the interment being in the Arnold cemetery at Conesus.
