Linwood T. "Darby" Davis, age 101, of Eliot, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
He was born in South Berwick on Aug. 6, 1907, the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Dodge) Davis. Darby was raised and educated in South Berwick and had graduated from Berwick Academy.
Darby started working at the Rocky Gorge Woolen Mills in South Berwick, before moving his family to the Lawrence, Mass., area to work as a plant engineer for Malden Mills, where he retired in 1973.
In his retirement, Darby enjoyed spending his time helping his son, daughter and neighbors' build and remodel their homes. Darby always enjoyed working hard and staying busy with small projects and odd jobs. When he was not working, he loved to go out dancing on Friday and Saturday nights with his wife, Grace.
Darby was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Grace (Joy) in 1997; his sons, Guy Davis in 1943 and Dean Davis in 1992.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Jean Davis-Blickensderfer of Eliot; daughter, Joy Cohen and her husband, Gary, of Eliot; grandchildren, Jennifer Cohen Smith and her husband, Jim, of Guilford, Conn, Jodi Hayashida and her husband, Michael, of Auburn, Maine, Gregory Cohen and his wife, Bonnye Hart, of Elizabeth City, NC, Thaedra Thompson and her husband, Mark, of Albuquerque, NM, and Sarah Davis and her husband, Robert DiMambro, of Barrington. Great-grandchildren, Addison Dyah Smith of Guilford, Conn, Kaia Grace and Tessa Joy Hayashida of Auburn, Maine, Jonah Mark Thompson of Albuquerque, NM, and several nieces and nephews also survive him.
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, Aug. 31 from 6-8pm at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St. in South Berwick. Officers and members of St. John's Masonic Lodge, where Darby was a life member and past master, will conduct services at 6:15pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 11am, burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in South Berwick.
