(WMC-TV) - Hundreds of people turned out to remember the short life of 3-year-old Maurice Brown, Junior on Saturday. A scuffle broke out during the little boy's funeral service.
Progressive Missionary Baptist Church was filled with family and friends who shared the loss and memories of little Maurice.
"I've said it before and I'll say it again, only God knows the pain I feel inside when it comes to my son but I know he's in a better place and I'm gonna see him again one day," said the boy's mother, Latoya Page Kanneh.
Maurice Junior's body was found inside a trash bin south of downtown on Tuesday. His father, Maurice Brown Senior, is charged with first degree murder in his death.
"At the precious age of three, Junior could probably recite more scriptures than me. You'd think he was too young to know the Lord, but they were very well acquainted," said his aunt, Princess Page.
As people remembered what a sweet boy Maurice Junior was, two men began to exchange words.
When the fight broke out, the service stopped and people began to fill the foyer. Memphis police were called to the scene but no arrests were made.
When the service resumed, the three-year-olds family asked for continued prayers for strength from the community.
"My baby, my baby, but I know you're in a better place. I know you're in a better place. Can't nobody do like the Lord can do, can't nobody keep him like God can keep him," said his mother.
R.S. Lewis and Sons donated the funeral expenses for Maurice Brown Junior. He was buried this afternoon in Elmwood Cemetery.
