Hiram served as county commissioner for 4 years, and as Minnesota State Representative in 1916-1917.
He was found dead in an automobile in a snow filled ditch on a return trip from Ivanhoe. He apparently died of a heart attack.

Hiram was first married to Amanda Lorana Sundell with whom he had 7 children before she died. Twelve years later, Hiram married Matilda Caroline Johnson Danielson, who was the widow of his younger brother Wesley. Matilda and Wesley had six children before Wesley was killed in a train wreck in North Dakota.

Hiram and Mathilda had another six children for a grand total of nineteen children in this family. The ages are spaced every two years as if only one couple had produced them all.
