Josephine R. Arens, age 94 of Brooklyn, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Brooklyn Community Estate. Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 7, 2012, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn, IA, with Fr. Brian Shepley officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Brooklyn, Iowa. Visitation: 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, July 6, 2012, Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn with a Rosary to be recited at 4 P.M. and a Scripture Service at 7:30 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Josephine Ruth Wilson was born March 7, 1918 in Irving, Iowa, the twin daughter of George and Rose Stalens Wilson. She received her education in the Koszta school. Josephine married Charley C. Arens on February 5, 1938 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. The couple farmed near Chelsea, then north of Hartwick and later near Blairstown. In 1950, they settled at their present farm near Brooklyn. They were blessed with four daughters. Josephine was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Brooklyn, the Altar and the Rosary Society, and the Poweshiek County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed being a farm wife, helping with field work and chores. She also liked gardening and crocheting. Josephine made each of her daughters, and eleven grandchildren an afghan. She was an avid walker and walked two miles daily until she was 92. She and Charley enjoyed many afternoons in their retirement boat, fishing away the hours. They also enjoyed playing cards with their family and friends. She also enjoyed baking for others, and her family and friends enjoyed her pies, chocolate cakes and brownies. She dearly loved her grandchildren and they were each treated to a special birthday cake plus a card on every holiday.
Josephine is survived by her four daughters, Mary Ann Heishman and husband Phil, Elsie Foels and husband James, all of Brooklyn, Alice Arens, and Irlene Tuttle and husband Russ, all of Malcom; eleven grandchildren, Michelle (Greg) Thomas, Sheryl (Kendall) Arp, Richard Foels, Robert (Wendy) Foels, Mark Foels, Michael Foels, Jennifer (John) Dyson, Jeremy Grier, Curtis (Angela) Grier, Andrea (Jeremy) Goodrich, and Christina (Bart) Willis; twenty five great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; Madison and Drew Thomas, Colby Heishman, Shianne, Tyieshia, Milo, and Montana Arp, Lindsey, Emily, Jonathan, and Cassie Foels, Derek, Peyton, Jessah, and Caden Wilson, Addyson, and Noah Dyson, Nathan, Kyle, Matthew, Tristan and Tanner Grier, Kimberly , Christopher and Kate Goodrich, and Makayla and Jenna Tuttle; Also surviving are four sisters, Bernice Papesh, Virginia McVay, Dorothy Walton and Elnora Schwab.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister in infancy, her husband Charley in January 2002, an infant son Richard, her parents, three sisters, Edna Kouba, Arilla Prichard, Irline Vileta, and two brothers George and Charles Wilson.
