Don Juan Callaway was born in Raleigh County West Virginia on May 30, 1908 to Clara Daniels (father unknown). He was taken in and adopted by Joshua Moses "Robert" & Malinda Callaway of Trap Hill, West Virginia sometime before the 1910 Federal Census was conducted in April 1910. He had an older brother (or half-brother) named Ray who was also given up for adoption and given a home by William Robert & Mary Frances Daniel of Pemberton, Raleigh West Virginia.
When he was 22 years old he was working as a laborer for the railroad before eventually working and retiring as a coal miner and truck driver.
He married Callie Mildred Buckland, daughter of Elbert Wilson Buckland and Ada Pearl Pittman, on Christmas Eve of 1931 in Beckley West Virginia and although they were divorced in May of 1956, they remarried on October 6, 1956. Don and Mildred had four children, Peggy Lou, Phillip Waine, Betty and Donald Gene.
Don was a patient at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley West Virginia when he died from lung cancer on December 10, 1971.
