President of the Eaton National Bank of Eaton, Colorado. He was the son of Thomas Patton Johnston and Elizabeth Shellabarger of Ohio. According to the biography of his son, Clarence Thomas Johnston, James held a variety of jobs prior to becoming a banker. He was a farmer, miner, railway canal builder, superintendent of irrigation systems, and an administrative officer in Wyoming, before entering the field of banking in Colorado in 1885. He was also a founder and president of the First National Bank of Ault, Colorado, in 1906. He retired in 1920 and moved to California. His first wife was Melissa Drummond, with whom he had three children, and at the time of his death he was married to Anna H. Fox.
