William Walter Shewan

William was born July 28, 1895 in the Poplar district of the East End of London, England. His father, William J. Shewan (1867 - 1947), was born in Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. His mother, Elizabeth Collins Dance Shewan (1869 - 1952), was born in England.

William and his father emigrated to the United States, departing Liverpool, England on June 24, 1911 on board the S.S. Celtic and arriving at Ellis Island on July 2, 1911.

William and his father eventually settled in Erie, Pennsylvania. His mother and younger siblings joined him when they emigrated to the United States in 1921. In 1919 William married Louisa P. Sauer (1896 - 1984). Together they raised five children:

* Richard W. Shewan (1920 - 1944)
* a son (still living)
* Donna Shewan Gingenbach (1925 - 1993)
* William T. Shewan (1933 - 1994)
* a daughter (still living)

In 1944, Richard, a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army and serving with the 4th Armored Division, was killed in France.

William earned his living as a truck driver. He was employed by Associated Transport for 15 years until his retirement in 1964. He and Louisa were founding members of Blessed Sacrament Church in Erie. In 1969 William and Louisa celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

William died Jan 5, 1973. In addition to his parents and son Richard, he was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Shepherd. He was survived his wife, Louisa, and by four of his five children (including William and Donna). He was also survived by his half-brother Frank Dance of British Columbia, Canada, brother Walter C. Shewan of Daphne, Alabama, and sister Beatrice Young of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survived.
