Excerpt from A Brief History of Trimble Township, By Dr. James G. Blower:
John and Emma Bentley Blower were born in Staffordshire, England in the time of a great depression. John was a tall, well-built young man, a strong Christian, Methodist, and devout worker, though uneducated. Emma Bentley was a beautiful girl, the daughter of a prominent Civil Engineer and his wife, Prudence, and well educated. They lived in Staffordshire for many years, where they had their first 5 children; Fanny, Harriet, Ida, Mary, and Steven. They moved to Linton, where they had 6 more children; Phillip, James, Thomas, Edward, George, and Prudence. They received an offer of paid transportation to the coal mining region in southern Ohio, from their wealthy Uncle, Stephen Bentley of Pennsylvania, and so the family came to America in 1888 and landed in Derthick, Ohio in the midst of a prosperous coal mining community. They took up residence in a small house in Seldom Seen Hollow. Just five families lived in this hollow, the Zimmers, Nichols, Blowers, Walburns, Hamiltons and the Meshicks. After a few years, they purchased a larger home in Glouster that adjoined a farm they leased.
Elizabeth Fanny Blower married the preacher, Joseph Hancock.
Harriet Emma Blower married a carpenter housebuilder, Justice Birtcher.
Mary Blower married a schoolteacher, Elza Watson.
Philip Blower married a housewife, Polly Jones.
James Blower married a funeral director's daughter, Blanche Morgan.
Thomas Blower married Mary Florence.
Ted Blower married three times.
George Blower married Effie Myers.
The other three children passed away while infants.
