A native of Phoebus, VA, Josephine "Jackie" Lynch was one of three daughters of Joseph and Bertha Lynch to enter the St. Cecilia Congregation. Her two sisters, Sister Cecilia and Sister Francis Bernard, preceded her in death.
She entered the Congregation of St. Cecilia in 1935 and professed her first vows in 1937. She completed studies in teacher education, graduating with a B.A. degree from Peabody College in Nashville in 1953, and went on to serve the congregation for more than 60 years in assignments as a teacher and principal in Tennessee, Alabama, Ohio, and Virginia elementary schools.
Sister established preschools and kindergartens, revised curriculum plans, published newsletters, and served in various positions on national boards. During the 1960's, she was elected president of the National Catholic Kindergarten Association of the Mobile-Birmingham Diocese.
She taught at Notre Dame School in Chattanooga, TN, from 1938 to 1942. In 1956, she was among the first teachers at St. Rose of Lima School in Birmingham, AL; she taught kindergarten at the school and also served as principal in the 1960's. Sister Antoninus served as Principal of St. Mary's School in Oak Ridge, TN, from 1980 to 1982, before returning to the school to teach second grade from 1989 to 1999, when she retired at age 82.
The funeral Mass was held at St. Cecilia Convent on Wednesday, April 20, with Bishop James D. Niedergeses as principal celebrant, assisted by Diocese of Nashville administrator Father David Choby and convent chaplain Father John Rock, SJ. Burial followed in the convent cemetery.
