Israeli Prime Minister. He served as the Prime Minister of Israel from 1983 to 1984 and 1986 to 1992 (Likud Party). Born in Poland, he was an active member of the Jabotinsky Betar Zionist youth movement and studied Law in Warsaw, prior to immigrating to the British-governed Palestine. He enrolled at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and became associated with Irgun Zvai Leumi (National Military Organization or "Etzel"). He was imprisoned by British authorities multiple occasions for his role (serving with the radical Lehi organization) in several attacks, including one in Cairo which killed a British minister in 1944. He would later find political asylum in France and worked in several business, before joining Israel's security services during the 1950s. By the 1960s, he became associated with Menachem Begin's Herut movement and in 1973, he was elected to Israel's Knesset. He served as Speaker in 1977 during the historic discussions with Egypt for the groundbreaking peace treaty. He became foreign minister during Begin's tenure in 1980 and after leaving that position one year later, he served as a key negotiator with several countries including Lebanon. He succeeded Begin as Israeli Prime Minister in 1983 and formed a close relationship with US President Ronald Reagan and Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger; the result would be the US-Israel Strategic Cooperation and the US-Israel Free Trade Agreement. Shamir formed a co-partnership with Labor leader Shimon Peres during his tenure. He retired from the political arena in 1996. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease. (bio by: C.S.)
