A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, he played the position of Goalie for the Detroit Red Wings from 1949 to 1955, 1957 to 1964, 1968 to 1969, Boston Bruins from 1955 to 1957, Toronto Maple Leafs from 1964 to 1967, Los Angeles Kings from 1967 to 1968, and the New York Rangers from 1969 to 1970. He was a recipient of the Dudley 'Red' Garrett Memorial Award from 1948 to 1949, Vezina Trophy from 1951 to 1953, 1954 to 1955, 1964 to 1965, Calder Memorial Trophy from 1950 to 1951, and the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1971. he was also First All-Star Team Goalie in 1951, 1952, and 1953, and Second All-Star Team Goalie in 1954, 1955, 1959, and 1963. He died in May 1970 at the age of 40 from heart failure dur to a blood clot. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Player in 1971. (bio by: K)
