She was born Reba Risley Fox to Maud Atchison Fox and Leonard M. Fox in Weston, West Virginia. As a young girl, the family moved to her grandparents farm at "Fox's Corner" in Fishing Creek, Lower Township. She grew up with her sisters Marinda and Greta, brother Lewis and all her Fox cousins. She attended the Fishing Creek School and Cape May High School and worshiped at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Erma.
She had several interesting jobs in her young years, including defense work during World War II and dancing with the Shubert Follies in Philadelphia.
Her family includes sons Joseph Messina and Colonel William E. (Hazel) Lawson III; daughter Cynthia (and Ric) McCausland; granddaughters Kim Word and Lori Blake; nieces Ruth Ann (Dick) Catlett and Louise Lawson; nephew Lewis (Angie) Fox; cousins Peg Ferguson, Jack (Ruth) Fox, Sarah Munday, Ella Elliott, Anna Ruth Taylor, Ginny Fox, Janie (Mick) Hall, Peggy (Kirk) Endicott, Ed (Carol) McDuell, Tom Cupp, Jenny Cupp, Bob Cupp, Cathy Catlett, Liz Anne Catlett, John (Joann) Catlett, David (Lorie) Catlett, Stacey (Todd) Wilson, Kevin Hall, Bill Wright, Wendy (Donald) Davis, and Debbie Wygant.
Waiting for her on the other side were her husband, Sylvester J. Messina, son Lewis Lawson, sisters Greta Wright and Marinda Fox and brother Lewis Fox.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful and caring staff of Holy Redeemer Hospice, especially Nancy Baron, Barbara Hoepp, and our loving Dorene, who made it possible for her son Joseph to care for her in her home until the end of her life.
