Served as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. Under the name of Fred'k M. Hayler, (Bates) or Frederick Huyler (CWSS), he was mustered into Company A, of the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves/42d Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers as a Private on June 11, 1861 for 3 year term. However, he was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate, April 15, 1862. Under the name of Frederick Miller (Bates) or Frederick Hyler (CWSS), he was mustered into Company I, 148th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers as a Private on September 9, 1862. After June 1, 1865, he was transferred to Company E, 53d Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers where he appeared on the rolls as Frederick Hyler (Bates) and then was mustered out with Company E on June 30, 1865.
