Maria Domenica Serenelli-Corrato was born in 1885 in the town of Chianche located in the Province of Avellino in the Campania Region of Italy.
At the age of 24, Maria left her mother Antonia Serenelli's home to travel to Napoli, Italy where she boarded a ship, Principe Di Piemonte, and left her native Italy for New York, New York on May 18, 1909.
Sixteen days later, with only $10 in her pocket, single Maria arrived at Ellis Island on June 2, 1909 to begin her new life. She was met at Ellis Island by her sister's husband Joseph Abato.
In America, Maria met Michael Francesco Corrato, a native Italian who came to America in 1906. They fell in love and were civilly married August 15, 1909.
By April of 1910, the couple lived in an apartment at 341 Monroe Street in North Bergen, New Jersey. Michael was employed as a mixer at a fireworks factory. Maria was three months pregnant with the couple's first child, Maria Josephine.
On July 14, 1912, Maria and Michael decided to reaffirm their love by receiving the sacred Roman Catholic Sacrament of Matrimony and were married in Our Lady of Libera Church located at 5808 Kennedy Boulevard in West New York, New Jersey. At the time, they were living at 656 5th Street in North Bergen, New Jersey their with baby Maria Josephine.
By March 5, 1915, Maria and Michel were raising their four children Maria Josephine Corrato, Maria Antonetta Corrato, Frank Michael Corrato and Lucia Maria Corrato.
Through hard work and determination, by June of 1917, Maria and Michael owned their own fireworks business. They were living at 1459 Newkirk Street, North Bergen, New Jersey.
Sometime after January 17, 1920, Maria and Michael moved from 1228 Newkirk Avenue in North Bergen, New Jersey with their children to 214 Water Street, Mount Holly, New Jersey. This was across the road from their Mount Holly Fireworks Company.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 27, 1924, at approximately 3:15 p.m., Maria, who was 38 years old, was killed while working in a powder storehouse, a small sheet iron structure, at the Mount Holly Fireworks Company factory.
Maria's husband Michael was away in Trenton, New Jersey on business selling fireworks displays at the time of the explosion.
Also killed in the explosion was Maria's partner Augustus "Gus" Biagi. He was 30 years old. Gus had been employed by the Corratos prior to becoming their partner and formerly worked at the cannery factory in Mount Holly, New Jersey and in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Gus left behind a wife, Lucille Farfone-Biagi, of Italian decent, and their two children, daughter Agnes Biagi, age 10 and a son, Ellsworth R. Biagi, age 4. His family buried him in Brooklyn.
A funeral Mass was held for Maria at Sacred Heart Church in Mount Holly, New Jersey on Thursday, May 29, 1924. Interment followed, with a funeral procession led by an Italian 25 piece marching band, at St. Mary's Cemetery on Washington Street in Mount Holly, New Jersey.
Perinchief Funeral Home of Mount Holly, New Jersey handled the wake and burial.
