Karl L. Brown, prominent Central Market poultry wholesaler and retailer, was only eighteen when he started selling neighbors the chickens he was raising in the backyard of his home.

The early venture branched into a lifetime career of poultry selling which ended when he died in his home at 327 W. 4th. He was sixty-six.

The Erie native had been in failing health after suffering two cerebral hemorrhages seven years ago. His illness forced him to close the poultry stall three years ago at the Central Market, where he had been located for a number of years.

After he entered the commercial poultry business at the market, Mr. Brown purchased live chickens and butchered them at the market. He had wholesaled and retailed to thousands of Erie city and county residents.

He was born March 13, 1891, son of the late George and Ruth Spencer Brown. Jis father had been in the meat business in Erie before his death. And Karl benefited by the early boyhood experiences and from those of his father. He married Matheel Green on January 12, 1922.

He held a life membership in the Erie Elks and used his spare time growing flowers, principally roses, besides raising pedigreed dogs for his own enjoyment. Animals, birds and flowers were closest to his heart. He also like to raise canaries.

He is survived by his wife Matheel Green Brown; a son, Lee Spencer Brown, Erie; two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Heffner, Meadville; Mrs. Jean Ashworth, Erie; five grandchildren, William H. Heffner III, James A. Heffner, Robert, Cynthia and Jean Ann Ashworth; one brother, Frank C. Brown and three sisters, Mrs. Ezma Felton, Mrs. Arthur A. Obert and Mrs. Agnes B. Geddis, all of Erie.

Services were held at the Chester A. Schaal Funeral Home, 550 W. 9th. The Rev. A. Ray Cartlidge, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant officated.
