| Birth: | Mar. 3, 1766 | | Death: | 1799 | Mutineer. Able-bodied Seaman on the HMS Bounty. A hot-tempered bully, he was the first man on the Bounty to be flogged, receiving a dozen lashes for "insolent and mutinous behavior". He participated, with great enthusiasm, in the mutiny on April 28, 1789, but his problems with authority later lead to confrontations with head mutineer Fletcher Christian. As soon as the Bounty returned to Tahiti, Qunital went AWOL; upon his return he declared, "The ship is moored, and we are now our own masters". To prove him wrong, Christian tossed him in the brig. Despite this he joined Christian's group in their flight to Pitcairn Island. On January 23, 1790, Christian asked for a vote on whether or not to scuttle the Bounty to avoid detection. While the men debated the issue up on deck, Quintal calmly went below and set the ship on fire. On Pitcairn he viciously abused the Tahitians, including his wife; she committed suicide after he bit off one of her ears in a drunken rage. On "Massacre Day", September 20, 1793, Quintal escaped death at the hands of vengeful natives by fleeing into the mountains. After 11 days of hiding he went back to the settlement and killed Menarii, the leader of the native insurrectionists. In 1799 Quintal got into a dispute with John Adams and Ned Young, the only other mutineers still living, and was invited to Adams' house to discuss terms. After getting him drunk, Adams subdued Qunital and Young murdered him with a hatchet. Quintal was the last Bounty mutineer to meet a violent end.
