Anna Jane came to Texas from North Carolina in 1857 with her husband, Colonel John Smith and her children, Berta, who was ten years old, and Philander who was 12 years old, settling in Houston County. Philander died a short time after arrving in Houston County. We find him on the 1860 Houston County Census.

Anna Jane Pouncey married John Smith on February 20, 1834 in Blanton North Carolina.

Anna Jane Pouncey's family date back to the Revolutionary War in America.Her family had owned slaves since 1734 and operated the Pouncey Plantation in South Carolina. Anna's parents were James Pouncey of Cheraw South Carolina and Ann Kolb Pouncey.The Kolb and Pouncey families had owned slaves for nearly a century prior to Anna Jane being born and marrying Major Smith in 1834.
