James, a native of Scotland, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Delhi, Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private on 28 Oct 1861 at the age of 21. He mustered in Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry on 23 Nov 1861. Wounded in action on 11 Oct 1862 at Lick Creek, Arkansas. Promoted to Full 8th Corporal on 1 Nov 1863. Promoted to Full 6th Sergeant on 1 Jun 1864. Mustered out 4 Dec 1864 at Memphis, Tennessee, when term of enlistment expired.
James married Sarah Francis Gift on 6 Oct 1867. She was the daughter of Adam Gift and Catherine Lyle. They had two children, as far as known: Charles W Gray and Clara Grace Gray.
James died in Red Oak in 1914 at the age of 72 years 11 months.
