ERA BELLE MARSHALL McKEE, 103, retired switchboard operator for The Commercial Appeal, passed away peacefully June 24, 2012 in Horn Lake, MS. She was born September 28, 1908 in Lamar County, AL to Joel H. and Ada V. Marshall. Her husband of 35 years, Charles C. "Mac" McKee preceded her in death.
Mrs. McKee lived in the Berclair community of Memphis and was one of the earliest members of Berclair Baptist Church, where she remained active for 64 years, teaching Sunday School and GAs, participating in WMU, and later singing in the Senior Chorus. She was also an active community volunteer. Later in life, she moved to Southaven, MS and was a member at Broadway Baptist Church for 19 years, until her death.
She loved and was loved by her family. She had a special love for children, flowers, and Christian music.
Mrs. McKee is survived by three daughters, Virginia Ann Worley (Al) of Oakland, TN, Mary Jo Sowell of Southaven, MS and Jean McKee Walsh (Tom) of Memphis; five grandchildren, Alyson Whitaker (Brad), Susan Jerden (Chris), Clint Sowell, Courtney Marsh (Peter), and Meredith McKee Walsh, eight great-grandchildren, and a very special nephew, Richard Pilgrim (Doris).
Visitation will be Thursday, June 28 from 12 noon until service at 1 p.m., at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Poplar Avenue.
