Frank J. Walend, 86, of Boynton Beach, Florida and formerly of Elyria, died Sunday, September 3, 2000, at Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home. He was born July 10, 1914, in Elyria, Ohio and had resided in Boynton Beach since 1957 moving from Toledo.
From 1935 to 1945 Mr. Walend worked as a sports writer, reporter and state editor for the Chronicle-Telegram Newspaper in Elyria. From 1945-1948 he was the news editor of the Register Star-News in Sandusky. From 1948-1957 he worked as a copy editor, special sections editor and real estate editor for the Toledo Blade newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. He moved to Florida in 1957 and worked as the production editor for the Miami News until 1966. He then worked for the Miami Herald as a copy editor and financial news editor retiring in 1977. Mr. Walend was a past member of the American Newspaper Guild and Sigma Delta Chi. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church in Boynton Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen (nee Jurczynski); sons, Kenneth Walend of Brevard, NC and Thomas Walend of Margate, FL; daughter, Cynthia Battershall of Sonoma, CA; 5 grandchildren; brothers, Steve Walend of Lorain and Raymond Walend of Elyria and sisters, Jane Franko of Lorain and Bernice Denes of Elyria. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna (nee Sobotka) Walendziak and brother, Bernard Walend.
