| Birth: | Apr. 27, 1847 Herkimer Herkimer County New York, USA | | Death: | Sep. 8, 1933 | Industrialist. He is best known as the inventor of the extension ladder (1867), the nickel plated, solid steel nutpick and spring-jointed nutcracker (1913). 160 million nutcrackers have been produced since. He founded the H. M. Quackenbush Company in 1871 after quitting his job as a gun maker at Remington Arms in nearby Ilion, New York, to start his own metal working and gun shop. Considered today to be a highly ingenious inventor, engineer and businessman, in order to produce many of his products he also had to invent and make the machines needed to produce those products (he invented a machine to standardize shot size. This allowed his guns, when used with his shot, to function flawlessly. His shot also functioned in most other air guns of the same caliber without malfunctioning). Today, H. M. Quackenbush Inc. and its parent, HMQ Metal Finishing Group LLC, are two of the largest metal finishing and electroplating companies in the Northeast.
