Lemual was the son of William ( 1805-1848) and Rebecca D. (Foster)Smith (1807-1853). During his live he served as a Private during the Civil War. He served with the 3 Michigan Infantry Company-G. He enlisted on May 13, 1861 in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the age of 18. Lemual reenlisted on December 24, 1863. He later transferred to the 5 Michigan Infantry Company-F on June 10, 1864. His discharge came on July 5, 1865.
After returning home he was known as a highly respected member of the Owosso community.
Cause of death- Inflammation of the lungs caused by a ten day illness.
