DeWitt Clinton Crawford was the son of Judge John Crawford and Mary Catlin. He married Olive Jefferson in 1850 and in 1860 they were living in Delaware County, Iowa.

DeWitt was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted at Chickasaw, Iowa, as a Captain on 28 Sept 1861 at the age of 36 years. Commissioned an officer in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry on 26 Nov 1861. Resigned 28 Sept 1862. Cause and acceptance not reported. DeWitt served with the Company in the field in Missouri and Arkansas until his resignation.

By 1870 DeWitt and family were living in Chemung County, New York. Children, as far as known, were Adele, Marcus, and Ward. Olive died in Chemung County in 1872 at the age of 43 years.

DeWitt served as postmaster in Pine Valley Twp, Veteran, Chemung County, New York in 1873 and as justice of the peace in 1875.

In 1880 he was living in Dix, Schuyler County, New York, with his sister, Lucy Fox, who was a widow; and his mother, Mary C Crawford.

DeWitt was a resident of Horseheads, Chemung County, New York, when he died in 1901 of dyspepsia. He died at the age of 76 years 7 months.
