John is the son of Augustus Frederick Shapleigh, Sr. and Elizabeth Ann Umstead Shapleigh. He was a medical doctor, married to Anna Torrey Merritt, Oct 27, 1886. He graduated Wash. Univ 1878, St. Louis Medical College 1881, specialized in diseases of the ear, Vienna, Austria 1884-85. He died of cancer of the gall bladder and biliary ducts in the St. Louis Hospital.
