Josepha Bethia Bell, daughter of John Pressley Bell and the former Isabella Hemphill Caldwell, was born July 13th 1862 near Winnsboro, South Carolina. Known as "Josie" by her parents and older sister, Jane; Josie's family were members of "Old Brick" Ebenezer A.R.P. Church; where her great grandparents were charter members.
On November 19th 1889, Josie married the young doctor, Joseph Lucius Gaston, son of the late Capt. Joseph Lucius Gaston and Mrs. Margaret Brice [Hemphill] Gaston of Chester, South Carolina and emigrated west to Montgomery, Alabama; where Dr. Gaston set-up his practice. They were accompanied to Montgomery by Josie's mother and grandmother, Martha Caldwell. Dr. Gaston and Josie never had children.
Josepha Bell "Josie" Gaston departed this life on October 28, 1935 at the age of 73. She was laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Greenwood Cemetery.
