Joseph Lucius Gaston, son of Joseph Lucius Gaston, Sr. and the former Margaret Brice Hemphill, was born the 11th day of November 1860 in Chester, South Carolina. He had one older sister, Janie. His father was killed during the Battle of Seven Pines in 1862 when he was still a todler.
Raised by his mother, Lucius was educated at local schools in preparation to entering Erskine College in Due West and evenually attending Columbia Medical School in New York City. He received his medical degree in 1885.
On November 19th 1889, Dr. J. Lucius Gaston married Miss Josepha "Josie" Bell, daughter of the late John P. Bell and Isabella Caldwell Bell of Winnsboro, South Carolina. Lucius and Josie moved to Montgomery, Alabama shortly after their wedding; where Dr. Gaston became a well known heart specialist. They never had any children.
Dr. Joseph Lucius Gaston departed this life on October 16th 1929 at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 26 days. He was laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery.
