Vernon Little, 86, passed away peacefully at his daughter Susan's home on June 18, 2012.
Vern was born in Delta, Utah on July 17, 1925 to Ezekiel Ross and Lillie Laura Little, the oldest boy in a family of seven children. He was four when the Great Depression engulfed the country. During those lean years, he learned to work hard and make do with very little.
Then came World War II. At the age of 17, Vern left Provo High School to join the United States Marine Corps. He fought with the Fourth Marine Division in the South Pacific with battles on Saipan, Roi-Namur, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in December 1945. He served his country proudly and the bonds he formed with fellow Marines were everlasting. Semper Fi!
After leaving the Marine Corps, he returned to Provo, Utah and entered Brigham Young University (BYU) earning a Bachelor's degree in Marketing. He was fond of telling people, "I graduated from college before I graduated from high school."
He met his future wife Peggy at a BYU dance. He loved her red hair, English accent and outgoing personality. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in May 1953. They had two daughters, Susan Ann and Karen.
He joined State Farm Insurance as an agent in 1961 and set up his business in Orem, Utah. With Peggy as his secretary, they ran a successful agency for 34 years.
Vern's all-consuming passion was horses. For the past 39 years, he bred and raced American Quarter Horses. Rain or shine, he enjoyed being outdoors with them.
Vern is survived by 14 horses, his daughters Susan Leary and Karen Newman, son-in-law Pat Leary, five grandchildren (Cheyanne, Ashley, McKenzie, Kyle and Ryan), five great-grandchildren (Sage, Abby, Trey, Avery and Kyrie), three brothers and a sister (Harold, Shirel, Tom and Rosalie). He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Peggy, sister Maria, brother Ray and grandson John.
Vern's family is grateful to neighbors and friends for the love and support they have provided. Thank you.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Manila First Ward Chapel, 3396 North 900 West, Pleasant Grove, Utah. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Graveside service will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 "N" Street, about 2:15 p.m.
