Hemmie H. "Big Big Boy" Wynter
Birth: 2002
Mecklenburg County
North Carolina, USA
Death: Jun. 18, 2012
Mecklenburg County
North Carolina, USA

He was a big gray short hair cat. Hemmie's name came from Hemmingway and the stories he told of cats. He then became Hemmie Boy, as he was the only male in the litter. He was sometimes Hemmie the Hut, as a large cat who would sometimes sit up grooming himself and looking a bit like Jabba the Hut with his large belly showing. He was my Big Boy until I got two other male cats and then he became my Big Big Boy as he was the largest.

He was born in the Spring of 2002. I found his mother, Zoe in front of my home around February or March of 2002, it was a cold night and she was brought in and immediately became mine. A few weeks later, she was at the vet to be fixed and I got a call from my vet that it was two late, she was pregnant with 3-5 kittens. Oh well, they would became mine too.

The morning she had her kittens I could tell something was up, so I rushed off to a meeting and hurried home as fast as I could. Two gray kittens were already born. I always thought that they were Hemmie and his sister Sage (name later Little Bit), just a hunch, I never really knew as they looked so much alike. Shortly after I arrived home another little gray kitten was born, followed by a snowball white kitten named Ashton. The other gray kitten was named Bailey. Lil' Bit went to live with my father and his cat Aaron. I kept the rest.

Hemmie was a good boy but never really liked to be petted much. He LOVED to be talked to and loved to sit on your lap, he just would hiss or swat if he was petted too much. One time he was on the stairs and Brian walked by and had his hat swatted right off his head. He just sat there like he was the king of the castle. As I write this, I still have a scratch on my hand from his back claws sprining off of me so he could get between us on the couch.

If you talked to him, he would just walk around banging into furniture. He was a large cat but had the tinniest meow. When I was sitting at my desk working, we would come and meow, I would ask him "what is it" and he would bang around the room.

He loved water, anytime the water bowl was low he would let you know. When he walked and was happy, he would bang into things. One time he came up to me and meowed like he wanted something, I asked him what he wanted and he started banging his way down the hallway, I followed him and it turns out he wanted to get in the bathroom for some toliet water! I couldn't believe we had this great conversation with him and it turns out he wanted toliet water! Anyway, bathroom door ALWAYS had to be closed. A few times he would sneak in and get shut in there.

When you were in a room and he wanted in, he would take his front paws and threadmill on the door to be let in. It made quite a noise!

He was always a healthy cat, but Friday, June 15th he was hiding in the corner and I thought something was up, by Monday at the Vet, he was just gone with kidney failure. He was ten years old.

A few days after his death, I came across the book The Final Farewell: Preparing for & Mourning the Loss of Your Pet by Marty Tousley. Their is a collage of eight animals on the front including a plump gray cat that looks just like Hemmie.

I remembered a funny story today about Hemmie. I was puppy sitting my grandfathers dog Suzy while he was in the hospial. Suzy was just sitting on the couch and Hemmie walks by and just smacks her. Just for no reason but to say, "Hey - I am in charge here". He was a bad big big boy that day!
