Mrs. H. Dyer Observes Her 94th Birthday
Sitting in her easy chair, with mind and memory amazingly clear even though the body shows the wear of ninety-four busy years, Mrs. Harriet Dyer celebrated her anniversary. Born at Numidia on June 22, 1834, the first of thirteen children to be born to George and Catherine Fetterman and the only one of the family now living
When Mrs. Dyer came into the world Andrew Jackson was president of the United States. Since then there has been twenty-two presidents. The map of the United States and that of the world has been changed many times. The face of our immediate surrounding has been transformed. Few of the conveniences which are common to the generation were dreamed of. The site Ashland now occupies was a swamp. Trails coming from Sunbury and Catawissa merged near the Catawissa Road, crossed to Shoemakers garage and down Walnut, winding around the mountain to Fountain Springs and then past Fisher's farm and over Broad Mountain on its way to Pottsville. The stage coach transported the passengers and the mail. It was common in those days for folks to take long walks.
In the early years of her married life Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Dyer lived at Fountain Springs and Mrs. Dyer often tells of how they had a truck patch where the Hospital now stands. Most of her years were spent on farms near Numedia for the past thirty-eight years she has made her home at 1415 Centre Street. For four years Mrs. Dyer has suffered a body affliction which prevents her from busying herself about her home and while she mildly regrets that she must be waited upon, still her affliction has not affected her cheery disposition. Congratulations have been showered upon the good lady today and many times those who called have wished they might grow old as beautifully as she.
