William Riley Wasson was commissioned on September 1, 1862 as a 1st Lieutenant in Company S of the 9th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery Regiment during the Civil War. He was promoted to Captain of Company S on September 14, 1862. Captain Wasson was further promoted on December 30, 1862 to the rank of Major of the 9th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery Regiment.
William Riley Wasson married Harriet Maria Arnold on December 15, 1864 in the Jerusalem Reformed Church, Fuera Bush, New Scotland Township, Albany County, New York.
