Note by Pearl Nelson Houge;
Fred O. Nelson was also known as "The Danish Hercules" because of his great strength. He was the youngest of family of children who emigrated to the U.S. from Denmark in 1883. His mother had friends who had settled in Sherburn, MN, so she was headed for "Scar-borne", as she startled her listeners by saying what her destination was! Eventually, the family settled in Albert Lea. Fred Nelson and Katie Larsen were married in Albert Lea and had five children: Milo, Bethel, Blanche, Pearl and Gladys.
Fred was one of a team: Nelson & Willadson, who entertained at many county fairs, etc., with wrestling and also many other feats of great strength, thus "The Danish Hercules" name. Cards used by the team show them balancing heavy articles on their backs and lifting great weights.
Fred worked for the C.D. Edwards Company, an Albert Lea manufacturer of road grading equipment, steel culverts and iron bar shears (items which are still being sold around the world), for some time, but eventually he decided to keep his new ideas concerning the road graders that he worked on, to himself. He finally patented his own road grader, shortly befor his death. Were you to go to Washington D.C., I' m sure you could see the model he sent in to procure his patent. In Albert Lea today there are still two buildings that Fred and his fellow business men erected for their work. They are to be found on the north side of the city: the foundry and its accompanying block building on East Main Street, just befor you cross the Viaduct going north over the Rock Island railroad tracks.
Fred was cut down very early in life by what was called "Black Diphtheria," as he was just 37 years of age.
Katie raised her five children in an age when there was no Social Security and when few women left home to find work. She and the children did many things to keep the home together. At the time of this writing, I am still in the home she had built following Fred's death.
