Note from Noel Plemmons:
Frazier was the only one of Susan's children who would talk about their father and what happened before the move to Arkansas. And even that was limited. Susan and Jerome were not together when Hubert was borne. When Frazier went to his father to inform him of Hubert's birth, Jerome told him to leave and that he never wanted to see him or any of his brothers and sisters again. And this next tidbit may shock you even more. According to Frazier, Hubert was Jerome's brother's child. Susan and her children moved to Arkansas in 1903 while Hubert was still pretty young.

My Theories on Jerome Russell and Susan Plemmons

Susan listed herself as Single on Census Records from 1880 - 1900 when she was living in NC. On the 1910 Arkansas census she listed herself as a Widow. She was listed as a housekeeper in Spring Creek, Madison Co., NC, with 2 children, in 1880. On the 1880 Census Records for Fines Creek, Haywood Co., NC,
Loranza Russell is shown with a son named Robert Russell living with him AND a GRANDSON named Robert PLEMMONS, aged 6 yrs. I believe this is the son of Robert Jerome Russell and Susan L. Plemmons. The age matches Susan's son, Robert's age. I believe that the two younger children, Florence and Frazier were living with Susan in 1880. On the 1900 Census Records, Susan and her children are living in Fines Creek, Haywood Co., NC. (where Loranza Russell, Robert Jerome Russell, and Robert Plemmons were living in 1880). I believe she may have inherited part of Loranza Russell's farm, since she was the mother of his grandchildren. Robert Jerome Russell (he went by Jerome) was never shown to be living with Susan and her children. Any common law marriages that I have researched before always involved the couple living in the same house. I am puzzled as to why they never seemed to live together.
I have corresponded with Doris Parton of Sevier Co., TN. She married Robert Lee Parton (Dolly Parton's brother). Robert's grandmother was Tennessee S. Russell Parton. Tennessee Parton was Jerome Russell's youngest sister. Doris had a lot of info on Jerome Russell. His father, Loranza , was a minister. Jerome Russell was a self-taught dentist. He traveled around pulling teeth, making gold teeth, etc. Doris Parton knew a woman who remembered Jerome from the time he spent in Sevierville, TN. She said he never married anyone, although he fathered children by several women. He seemed to have spent a lot of time in Sevier Co. after the turn of the century (about the time Susan left NC). He had 2 children with at least 2 different women in Sevier Co., TN. He died there in the 1930's. One of his sons made the burial arrangements.
I guess that for some reason Susan and Jerome couldn't get along - although they had 8 children over a twenty year period - or maybe Jerome was leading Susan on, giving her hopes of someday marrying. He must have been very charming to have gotten away with all he did, with several women!
In all fairness to Susan, maybe that's what made her a bit of a "witch".
I have been searching for descendants of Susan's older children - hoping they would have more details. My father-in-law, Barton Plemmons, had always guessed his grandfather was a criminal or something, he had no idea that Susan never married, or at least never took the name of her children's' father. He knew his aunt Artie and her children well.

Uncle Fraiser walked to church every Sunday that he was able to, even when he beyond 90 years old. Uncle Fraiser thought his dad, or the man he thought to be his dad, was the smartest and handsomest man he ever knew. And as I learned from one your letters, he was a self-taught dentist. Uncle Fraiser was himself highly intelligent.
Frazier was the educated one of the bunch. He went to school, learned shorthand and worked on the railroad, in a supervisory capacity, during World War I. He and his wife, Octavia, had no children of their own but adopted two sons.
Of my dad's uncles, I knew Uncle Fraiser best followed by Uncle Garland and Uncle Hubert. I met Uncle Robert a couple of times. Dominoes was game they all liked to play. Uncle Hubert beat me several times while we were visiting him in Burkburnett. That was over 40 years ago.
