Mary's mother Hannah appeared on the 1870 Census, aged 22, living in Plymouth's West Township, Marshall County, Indiana, with her parents, Casper Grube, aged 60 and a farmer, and Sarah Grube, aged 66. It is unclear why Mary's father John wasn't with Mary's mother on that census, but their 4-month-old son William was there with Hannah. Also there was another of Casper and Sarah's grandchildren, granddaughter Margaret Seider, the daughter of Sarah (Grube) and John Seider.
Mary's parents did appear together on the 1880 Census, living in West Township, where John Holem (Holm on the record), aged 34, was farming for a living. Hannah, aged 30, was home with their three children--Mary, aged 8, Charles, aged 6, and Florence, aged 2.
On 28 Mar 1895, Mary married Noah Miller in Marshall County, Indiana, and they set up housekeeping in nearby Fulton County.
Three years after she married, Mary lost her father John Holem in 1898 at age 53ish.
Noah and Mary appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in Richland, Fulton Co., Indiana. Head of household was 75-year-old Peter Miller, a German immigrant. He and son Noah, aged 34, were farming together. Mary, aged 28, was identified as Peter's daughter-in-law. She reported that she had not yet had any children.
When the 1910 Census came around, they were still living in Richland, Fulton County. Noah, aged 44, was busy farming. Mary, aged 48, had under her care 2-year-old Martha A. Peterson. Noted in the relationship line was the phrase "held to raise".
They were still living in Richland in 1920. Noah, aged 53, was still actively farming. Mary, aged 48, was keeping house. Still with the couple was 12-year-old Martha, using the Miller surname and identified as their daughter.
Sometime before the next census, Noah and Mary divorced. Mary also lost her mother Hannah in 1924. Sad times.
Mary appeared on the 1930 Census, living in Plymouth's West Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. She gave "divorced" as her marital status and was back using her Holem surname. Still with her was 23-year-old "orphan" Arlavene (aka Martha) Peterson.
By the 1940 Census, Mary, aged 68, owned a home in West Township. Martha Peterson, aged 32, was identified as Mary's "ward".
Mary died on 18 Jun 1957 at age 85.
Martha's death year was not noted on the stone she had made for her mother. When Martha died in 1992, she was buried in Fort Wayne, Allen Co., Indiana.
