William Guttery was the son of Primitive Baptist minister, Robert Guttery, from Walker County, Alabama. His sister Elizabeth, was married to Rev. James Milton Baker, son of William Baker, one of the founding members of the San Marcos Primitive Baptist church. William Baker and his wife Vashti are buried in the same old Highsmith cemetery as William Guttery, while William's sister Elizabeth Guttery Baker and James Milton Baker, are buried in the new Highsmith cemetery. There is some confusion as to whether William's brother Newton W.B. Guttery, is buried in the old or the new Highsmith cemetery. He is listed as Guthrie in the new Highsmith, since his children changed their name about 1900.
William was first married to Elizabeth Williams Guttery who died in Alabama in 1858. William is shown as a 33 year old widower in the 1860 census with the following children:
John M. age 10
James M. age 7
Columbus C. age 5.
William married for a second time to Elizabeth Christine Shirley born about 1845, and they are found in the 1870 census with the following children:
Charles age 15 (known as Columbus C. in the 1860 census)
and their own children:
Sarah age 8
Benjamin age 4
Leonard age 3
Robert age 6 months.
William can not be found in 1880, probably because he had moved or was moving to Texas.
