After first teaching school he learned the boat building trade from his father and took over the business at his death. He built barges and boats at his yards on the Erie Canal and later erected the Duston and Howlett buildings. He retired from that business and joined the Durston Book Store and became connected with Lefever Arms Company where he became president. It later became the Duston Gear Company. Among other interests he was secretary of the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts.
