Palmer Ellsworth Sheaffer, 76, of HCR 63, Richfield, died at 3:20 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born March 15, 1923, in West Perry Township, Snyder County, he was a son of the late Homer and Minnie L. (Martin) Sheaffer. His wife, Irene E. (Hoffman) Sheaffer, whom he married June 1, 1946, survives.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Delbert C. (Diane S.) Ferster, Boyertown; a brother, Charles A. Sheaffer, Mount Pleasant Mills RR2; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Milbrand, in 1978; brothers, Wilmer H. Sheaffer and John S. Sheaffer; and sisters, Pauline M. Sheaffer and Patricia J. Sheaffer in childhood.

He was educated in the Evandale Grammar Schoolhouse.

He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Purple Heart for valor.

He retired in 1988 after 20 years as owner/operator of the Sheaffer Lumber Company, Richfield RR1. He had previously worked at Naylor's Garage in Richfield and for the VanDyke Brick Company in Thompsontown.

He was a member of Richfield Mennonite Church, Richfield Ambulance League, Richfield Fire Company, and Richfield Sportsmen's Club.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday at Richfield Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry R. O'Connell officiating and Pastor Chan Cutting assisting. Interment was in Richfield Union Cemetery, Richfield.

Family received friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the church.
