Composer, Musician. He is best remembered for his numerous Oscar nominated scores for movies and television, including the theme for "Star Trek," "Star Trek: the Next Generation," "Dr. Kildare," "The Waltons," and "The Man from UNCLE." He had been nominated for 17 Academy Awards, and won one Oscar and five Emmy awards. Born in Los Angeles, California, at the age of six, he knew he wanted to study music, and became a classically trained composer and conductor, attending film composition classes at the University of Southern California. He put together a number of television and movie scores that are familiar to most audiences, including such scores as the theme for "The Twilight Zone," the clarions of the movie, "Patton" (1970), the theme song of the acclaimed television series, "The Waltons" as well as his more well-known theme songs for ‘Star Trek'. He was not afraid to try new sounds and new instruments, including the use of electronic sounds. He won his only Oscar for the score of the movie, "The Omen" (1976). He was also nominated for 19 Golden Globe awards, although he did not win any. He passed away in his sleep after a long battle with cancer.
