OBITUARY:
Well-known Sailor dies in Home, victim of Heart Disease. The body of Arthur T. Conkey, 63, former Great Lakes sailor who died
Wednesday of heart disease, was discovered Friday night by police in the Conkey home, 718 Erie Street, where he had been living alone since the death of his father, Capt. Arthur Martin Conkey, in 1934.
Police Chief Herman J. Nelson, neighbor, and lifelong friend of Mr. Conkey, said this morning that inactivity around the Conkey home during the last three days prompted him to make an investigation. He called Traffic Sergt. Ralph J. Irwin, who entered the house with the police chief and found Conkey's body on the floor of the living room.
Coroner H. Clinton Downs, who directed an autopsy conducted by Dr.Frederick Ludwig and Dr. R. R. Licker, said Conkey had been dead 60 hours. Death was caused by heart disease, he said.
Mr. Conkey was born in Port Huron, Feb. 5, 1876,* and attended school here. He sailed the Great Lakes during his youth and become a first mate for the Pittsburgh Steamship company. His active career ended 30 years ago, when his brother Anthony Conkey, a marine reporter, drowned while making a mail deliver to the steamer of which Arthur Conkey was first mate.
Arthur leaped overboard in an effort to save his brother and swam the rapids of St Clair river nearly eight hours before shipmates
persuaded him to give up the search. Arthur was struck by the boat's propeller blade while searching for his brother's body, which was
recovered six months later.
Mr. Conkey is survived by two nieces, Miss Elizabeth M. Conkey, Port Huron, and Miss Phyllis Conkey, Chicago.
The remains are in the Albert A. Falk mortuary, where funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday.
