He was born aboard the Black Swan in Port Chalmers at Dunedin, New Zealand. His father, Joseph Reinhardt Werner, was Prussian and his mother, Harriet Taylor, was English.
Nov 15, 1864, Black Swan departs for Callan with 10 passengers including Mr and Mrs Werner and family per Otaga Daily News Nov 16th.
The family were globe trotters for years until finally settling down in England so the children would get a formal education.
