Barbara's middle name of Ara hasn't been found in the documents I have seen. Please let me know if there are other proofs of this. There is a Barbara living in Andrew's household in 1850, which one could speculate is his mother. The maiden name of Hollingsworth, seems reasonable as Abraham Hollingsworth Mahaffey, potentially a brother, has the middle name that was a common practice in that era. Also both Andrew and Abraham have sons with the middle name of Hollingsworth. There is also speculation that their mother was Mary Barbara Brockman or Mary P. Brockman, neither has been documented that I have found.
Another speculation, is that Andrew was born September 4, 1817, in Adams County, Ohio, and that he is the twin of Abraham Hollinsworth Mahaffey (1817-1878). Family stories claim that Abraham was born on the 3rd just before midnight and Andrew came after midnight, thus giving them different days of birth. It was said that their father said "God Bless America" when Andrew arrived which gave his middle name. However, the only documentation I can verify for Andrew's year of birth is the 1850 census that has America's age 36 which makes the year 1814, and H. Mahaffey living next door is 33, making his year of birth 1817.
Andrew married February 22, 1839, Ara Lenhart in Brown County, Ohio.
He married Martha Ann Flowers May 31, 1848, in Muskingum County, Ohio.
Known Children:
1. William Flowers Mahaffey (1849-1924)
2. Abraham H Mahaffey (1850-1918)
3. Ara (Mahaffey) Allen (1852- 1927) Only daughter named after Andrew's first wife, Ara.
4. Andrew Mahaffey (1855-?)
5. Franklin Coats Mahaffey (1857-1933)
6. Nehemiah Green Mahaffey (1861-Bef. 1870)
7. Valentine D. Mahaffey (1862-Bef. 1870)
8. Clinton Loudon Mahaffey (1863-1875)
9. Alexander Mahaffey (1865-?)
10. John Lewis Mahaffey (December 12, 1866-April 20,1871)
There is a notice November 15, 1866, in the Highland Weekly News, in Hillsboro, Ohio, stating, "Andrew Mahaffey, Esq., a well known citizen of Adams County, died of apoplexy on Sunday last."
Though there is speculation that Andrew is buried in Decatur Cemetery, there was no marker found when I made a request and no proof that he is there, thus I removed him from that cemetery and await someone finding where we can prove he is buried.
