School girl who was murdered. She was adopted in 1919 and was probably of White Russian descent. Her body was left near the Fox Tower which still stands.
She is the subject of a recent book "Midnight in Peking" by Paul French. Her father and others believed her drugged, kidnapped and killed while resisting sexual assault by a predatory ring of British and American ex-pats who preyed on girls.
At this late date nothing can be proved one way or the other as to who killed her. However, no proof has been offered as to an alternative explanation or suspect(s). Just supposition.
The chief suspect was interned by the Japanese military during WWII and died after the end of the war without ever returning to the United States. His wife and children had returned to the United States prior to the war and never returned to China.
The investigation into her death is believed by most as being thoroughly botched from the start.
