The Linford Monument is located close to the Willie Meadow and is in the center of the Pioneer trail. The Linford Monument was dedicated in 1998 by the descendants of John Linford. Buried here are nine people who died on October 19 through 22.
Forty-eight year old John Linford was a convert from England and a member of the Willie Handcart Company with his wife Maria and four of their sons. Their oldest son, James, was serving as a missionary at the time of their emigration and was not able to accompany them. This was probably a blessing because James was never healthy or strong. He served for over four years before finally going to Utah in 1861.
John Linford had caught cold while camping at Iowa City and gradually grew worse until he could not walk. Maria and her sons had to pull him in their handcart. When the snow began to fall and the cold was intense, John, in his weakened condition, could not stand it, and finally died on the banks of the Sweetwater on October 21, 1856, where the company had come to a grinding halt due to deep snows and no provisions.
Before he died his wife asked if he was sorry they had made the journey. John answered, "No, Maria. I am glad we came. I shall not live to reach Salt Lake but you and the boys will, and I do not regret all we have gone through if our boys can grow up and raise their families in Zion." He died the same day the rescue wagons found them.
Maria and the boys made it to the Salt Lake Valley, and she was sealed to John in the Endowment House in 1859 by Brigham Young.
