Took his own life due to failing health per St. Albans Daily Messenger of 11 January, 1855. Wife later stated his death was 1 December 1857 in Three Blackmore Genealogies; supposedly this information came from his wife, Laura Ann Abbott. daughter of Abener and Laura (Hammond) Abbott of Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont. Headstone says 1854. However, the St.Albans Messenger states that this incident occurred 1 January 1855.
The History of Barnard is more graphic, stating that he 'committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor, going out of the house in the nighe to a place near the bridge across the creek west of his house. Hist family continued to live on the place.'
Laura later married Isaac Dalton, son of Samuel and Judith Dalton of Stockbridge, who died in Warren, NH in 1888, and had three additional children.
Barnard History also indicates that the couple, Carlos and Laura, resided in the 'brick house at the mouth of Pond Brook,' which would likely have been the house his father, John Ellis, Jr. built.
