SHREVEPORT, LA – Celebration of Life services for Tommy Keith Cryer, 62, will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 7, 2012, in the Centuries Memorial Chapel with the Lodge of Sorrow Masonic presentation.
Tommy Cryer was born September 11, 1949, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to the late Thomas Preston and Marjorie Iva Gibson Cryer and was called home June 4, 2012, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He attended Sam Houston High School in Moss Bluff, Louisiana - graduating third in his class in 1967. Tommy received the American Heritage Award, Continental Oil Scholarship, T. H. Harris Scholarship, JFK Memorial Scholarship and the Civitan Award. Tommy was involved in several activities at Houston High such as Football letterman, FBLA, Beta Club, Drama Club founder and Literary Rally.
He attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, B.A. 1970 (Psychology, Sociology, Military Science and Pre-law), 3.4 GPA. Tommy achieved a multi-major degree in three years at McNeese University.
Tommy attended LSU Law School, Baton Rouge, LA, J.D. 1973, Honor Graduate, Order of the Coif and inducted LSU Law School Hall of Fame, 1987.
He served this grateful nation by serving his country as Captain in the U.S. Army, Adjutant General Corps.
Tommy's professional accomplishments where Louisiana Constitutional Convention, 1973, Special Advisor and Draftsman (Bill of Rights, Municipalities). Hargrove, Guyton, Ramey & Barlow, Shreveport, Louisiana, 1973-1975; Associate engaged in Oil & Gas Transmission (including extensive work in expropriation), Corporate, Estate, Personal Injury and others. Private Practice, Shreveport, Louisiana, 1975 – Practice has included virtually every aspect of the law, both criminal and civil, with clientele consisting of numerous individuals, families and business (including many third generation clients) whose varied needs have provided experience and expertise across an extremely broad spectrum. Litigation in all courts, including pro hoc vice appointments to try cases in New York, California and Texas. Extensive trial experience, bench and jury, and appellate experience including Louisiana Supreme Court, in which have been privileged to successfully advocate several cases forging new law (two of which were significant enough that the legislature overturned them within one year).
His civic activities persisted of; Shreveport Jaycees (exhausted rooster), Board of Directors, Legal Counsel, Chaired numerous projects. Caddo Heights United Methodist Church, Board of Trustees 1974-1980. Shreveport Optimist Club, Board of Directors. Past Master, W.H. Booth Lodge #380, F & AM. Past Master, First Masonic District Lodge. Louisiana Grand Lodge, Law & Jurisprudence Committee; Board of Charities and Benevolences; Education Committee; Certified Instructor; Lecturer at numerous Grand Master's Seminars across the State. Scottish Rite Bodies, Shreveport Valley, 32 degree. El Karubah Shrine, Shreveport, Louisiana. Past President, Shreveport High Twelve Club. Chairman, Shreveport Republican PAC, 1991-3, Delegate 1992 State Republican Convention; oversaw and consulted for eleven campaigns, left office 11 and 0. (No longer active in politics)
Tommy's personal interests; study of History and Constitutional Law, Hunting and Fishing, Woodworking, Licensed Pilot, Multi-engine Land.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; Johnny Lloyd Cryer, first wife; Carolyn Fisher. Left to share precious memories of Tommy will be his beloved wife Dee Dee Cryer, one sister; Susan Faye Cryer, four brothers; Timothy Ray Cryer (Pat), Danny Michael Cryer (Cathy), Gary Lee Cryer (Darlene), and Randy Gibson Cryer (Nicole), one sister-in-law; I.J. Lutz (Dick), one brother-in-law; Jim Bowman (Tammy), along with many extended family members and country wide friends.
