For decades, Sylvia Adam and her brothers ran J.J. Schowalter Co., a Port Washington party-supply business started by their father in 1930.
“We would all do a little bit of everything.” Her brother Allan said. “She was very good at bookkeeping. My father pretty much taught her that.”
“She was a good partner and a good sister. She was always there when you needed her. You’d give Sylvia something to do, and she’d find a way to do it.”
The siblings became partners in the business in 1953, and Mrs. Adam continued in the partnership even after one brother retired to Florida in 1986, Mr. Showalter said.
“She stuck with me,” he said, noting the business closed in 1997.
Mrs. Adam died Sunday, April 13, at the Harbor Club, where she had lived for the past three years. She was 89.
A native of Port Washington, she was born in Nov. 20, 1918, to Joseph and Dorothy Feltes Schowalter.
On Aug. 10, 1940, she married Frederick “Mippy” Adam at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Port Washington.
The couple worked at the former Port Country Club, now Squires Country Club, where Mr. Adam was chief bartender and Mrs. Adam was in charge of the waitresses and booked events, her brother said.
She also worked a secretary for retired Judge Charles Larson.
“She liked a lot of people,” her brother said. “She enjoyed entertaining at home with husband and playing cards with her girlfriends.”
Mrs. Adam also enjoyed gardening and traveling, he said, noting she had been to many of the states as well as numerous European countries.
She would map out her destinations on a large map of the United States, her brother said.
Mrs. Adam was a member of St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church in Port Washington, the Port Washington Historical Society, Ozaukee County Historical Society, Friends of the Niederkorn Library in Port, Friends of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and the Port Washington Senior Center.
She was a former member of the Daughters of Isabella.
Mrs. Adam is survived by her brother Jerome “Bud” (Mary) Showalter of Sebring, Fla., and Allan (Betty) Showalter of Port Washington and three sisters: Dolly Barclay and Rita Decker, both of Port Washington, and Lenore (Emery) Medinger of Sun City West, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frederick in 1987 and her parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, April 18, at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church in Port Washington. Father Patrick Wendt will officiate.
Visitation will be at the church from 5 p.m. Friday until the Mass.
Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Port Washington.
