William C Murphy, 80, prominent Hilham merchant, banker, farmer and churchman, died at his home Saturday night after a short illness.
He had been a merchant at Hilham for the past 55 years. He was also connected with the Farmer's Bank at Livingston, of which he was president for several years. He was a stockholder in the Union Bank & Trust Company at the time of his death.
Born in Jackson county 6 miles west of Hilham on September 5, 1854, he moved to Overton early in life. He was educated at Alpine Institute and shortly thereafter in 1879 opened a store at Crawford Mill, on the Hilham-Cookeville road. He went to Hilham in 1880 and has been there since.
He was married in May 1883 to Miss Emma L Jones of Cumberland county, Kentucky. Last year they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Mr Murphy was a Mason, an Odd Fellow, a life long member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church and a democrat. He was very active in his church.
Funeral services were conducted at the old Campground cemetery Tuesday afternoon with burial there.
He is survived by his wife and 6 children: Walter, Cookeville; Elmer and Herman, Florida; Mrs Beulah Copeland, Hilham; Buford, Alabama; Mrs Brown Minor, New York City; 1 brother, Andrew, Jackson county; 1 sister, Sarah Livingston, Overton county.
