Birth: unknown
Death: May 8, 1884
Lewis and Clark County
Montana, USA

Martha, known among her associates as "Dutch Lena" died on May 8, 1884, at Josephine Hensley's house on Wood Street, from the effects of an overdose of morphine administered by her own hand. The deceased had been for some time past employed as a dancer in Chicago Joe's dance house on Wood Street. At an inquest before Coroner Steele, there was evidence that she was under the influence of drink the previous day and was put to bed during the afternoon. In the evening, it was discovered that something serious was the matter with her, and Doctors Leiser and Morris were summoned. The doctors discovered that she had taken morphine and everything was done to save her, to no avail. An empty envelope marked "15 grains morphine," was found in her room, and it was recognized as one in which Charles Ballinger, clerk of Hale & Co. Drug Store, had put up fifteen grains of morphine for a messenger the previous day. It was assumed the deceased took it all in one dose. (Helena Independent, 5/9/1884) A rosewood casket, rough box and six pair of white gloves were purchased from Herrmann & Co. totaling $66.50. The funeral was held on May 9, 1884.
