Allen Snider Monts, 87, of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA, passed away August 29, 2009. He was born November 18, 1921, in Coles County, IL to Robert and Catherine (Snider) Monts, the fifth of six children. He married Elizabeth Jane Lionberger of Robinson, IL on June 5, 1948.
Allen served in the 78th Infantry in World War II, where an injury during the Battle of the Bulge required the amputation of his leg. Decorations included a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
After the war, he completed his Bachelor of Science in Education from Eastern Illinois University, then received a Masters of Education degree from Penn State. He taught high school industrial arts in Illinois for several years. Moving to San Diego in 1955, he taught industrial arts at Roosevelt Jr. High and history at Hale Jr. High before retiring in 1980. He was an avid golfer and woodworker and, after retirement, volunteered with the Disabled American Veterans.
Allen is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane; daughter Linda (Richard) Richardson of Milton, FL; son Michael (Joan) Monts of Avon, CT; son Charles (Michelle) Monts of Poway, CA; daughter Barbara Monts of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Salvation Army or DAV. A memorial service will be held September 19th, 3:30 p.m. at Torrey Pines Christian Church in La Jolla. San Diego Union-Tribune dated September 11, 2009
